Nearly 500 cats helped in Haywood County

Press Release
April 14, 2018

Haywood Spay/Neuter fixed and vaccinated 497 free-roaming cats in the county for the nine months between July 2017 and April 2018 thanks to a generous grant from PetSmart Charities.

Stray and free-roaming community cats are trapped, examined, vaccinated, and sterilized through Haywood Spay/Neuter's Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program. TNR has helped over 7,000 cats since 2009 when Haywood Spay/Neuter launched its current program.

Completion of the $18,000 grant happens to coincide with the opening of Haywood County's new Adoption Center and intake shelter. Without a continuous TNR program, shelters are unable to maintain a no-kill status due to multiplication of unfixed community cats.

Thanks to animal advocates like PetSmart Charities, Haywood Spay/Neuter's TNR success helped Haywood County become the third in the state of North Carolina to achieve 90% live release or no-kill status.

ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance handles the sterilization surgeries. The clinic transport van picks up and returns registered pets from the Haywood Spay/Neuter Waynesville facility every other Wednesday.

Haywood Spay/Neuter serves the community by providing low-cost spay/neuter services and animal wellness programs. Its programs include Operation Pit, Kittens2Barns, TNR, low-cost spay/neuter surgery for pets and strays, microchips for continuous ownership and quick shelter redemption of pets, and low-cost flea, tick, roundworm, and tapeworm treatments to keep pets healthy.

Spay/neuter has been proven more effective than hoping your cat or dog doesn't get pregnant. Safely fix cats at three months to prevent first heat and at four months for most dogs.
